“If you search for good, you will find favor, but if you search for evil, it will find you.” Proverbs [11:27]
This was a big one for me. I always thought I could help our children from falling into our family history of substance abuse by being an exceptional mother to them. Our oldest son flourished, he listened to what we had to say and he followed a path that has led to a successful life. Our youngest son did fall into the world of addiction. It is an understatement to say I was devastated. My biggest fear as a Mom was losing a child to death and that is the path he was on. My world fell apart. This experience taught me that the choices we make are our own. I cannot change another person, only myself. So I have realized that I didn’t fail as a mother, only in my thinking. I couldn’t keep my children from making poor choices.
Entrepreneurial AH-HA Moment:
My most significant Ah-Ha moment did come in the midst of our son’s drug addiction. For many years I had wanted to study and practice interior design, so to save my sanity I took a leap of faith and actually walked away from my retirement package. I had 20 years in the banking industry. I enrolled in an interior design program at my local school. It was very difficult for me, I was dealing with addiction, broken family relationships, quitting my job, returning to school full-time, not knowing how to use the computer programs and homework! What I did learn through all of this I discovered how strong, resilient and passionate I am about interior design.
I am now enrolled in a 12 month Strategic Business Transformation program. It will teach me the business skills that I am lacking. It is being taught by an experienced award-winning designer. She knows this field, this industry and she knows how to build a strong design business. Additionally, I am helping a gentleman redo his home as he has special needs. I’m working long distance with him to have his home ready for him when he retires.
